About the Piece

This was my first portrait in LEGO, which meant everything about it was a challenge. Nothing came easy—not the tones, the proportions, or the process. But what makes this piece special to me is the eyes. That’s where I focused the most, trying to capture the quiet resilience behind them.

Growing up, I spent a lot of time in the car with my dad, and Willie Nelson was always playing. As a kid, I didn’t love his voice—it was too different, too distinct. But as an adult, I’ve grown to appreciate every uneven tone, every break in his phrasing. I love how unique he sounds. I love that he’s an outlaw. I love that he’s completely himself.

This portrait is less about music and more about memory—an attempt to honor something I didn’t realize meant so much to me until I started building it, piece by piece.
